Why was ‘Emily In Paris’ cancelled?
It has been confirmed that Emily In Paris will end with its upcoming sixth season – but why has it not been recommissioned? Find out below.
Created by Darren Star, the Netflix romantic comedy series follows aspiring marketing executive Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) as she moves from America to Paris to start a new job. On its last run in the fifth season, released onto the streamer at the end of 2025, Emily’s career and love life took her to Rome and Venice.
Shooting for season six began in Greece this week, with events seeming to pick up from the end of season five, when Emily received a postcard from Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) asking her to meet him in Greece.
With the episodes now being filmed, the news has also arrived that the sixth season will mark the end for the show.
Emily In Paris was first produced by the Paramount Network in 2018 before moving to Netflix two years later, where it became a hugely popular series.
It did receive a backlash from people in France for perpetuating national stereotypes, resulting in offensive graffiti being sprayed on some of the locations used in the show, but nevertheless Emmanuel Macron has given his support to the show, even saying that he hoped the final years of the show would see it return to the French capital.
Why was Emily In Paris cancelled?
Netflix confirmed this week that the sixth season of Emily In Paris will bring the show to a close.
It appears, however, that the show has come to a natural conclusion rather than being cancelled. All seasons have been ratings hits for the streamer, but in a statement, show creator Darren Star has indicated that he is in agreement with the decision to call it a day after six seasons.
“Making Emily in Paris with this extraordinary cast and crew has been the trip of a lifetime,” Star said. “As we embark on the final season, I am so grateful to Netflix, Paramount, and, most importantly, the fans who have taken this incredible journey with us. We can’t wait to share this last chapter with you. Thank you for letting us be a part of your lives, inspiring your dreams of travel and your love of Paris. We will always have Emily in Paris!”
In a social media video, Collins added: “Season six will bring you everything you love about the show and serve as the final chapter in Emily’s adventure of a lifetime. Our entire cast and crew are pouring our hearts into making this a fantastic farewell season, which we’re now filming. I can’t wait for all of the magic ahead, and to celebrate our final season with you in the most chic way yet.”
