Paul McCartney Returns to SNL for Season 51 Finale

Sir Paul McCartney returned to the Saturday Night Live stage on May 16, marking his first appearance as a musical guest since 2012. The 83-year-old music legend helped close out the show’s Season 51 finale, performing alongside host Will Ferrell.

The evening featured a blend of comedy and music, with McCartney participating in a monologue skit alongside Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. The segment saw the trio discussing iconic hits before McCartney humorously directed Smith back to his drum kit.

McCartney’s musical set included his latest single, “Days We Left Behind,” from his upcoming album The Boys of Dungeon Lane, set for release on May 29. The performance was visually anchored by archival footage of his early career and his time with the Quarrymen. He also treated the audience to a rendition of the Wings classic “Band on the Run” and, during the show’s goodnights, a surprise performance of “Coming Up,” a track he originally debuted on SNL during its fifth season.

In addition to his musical contributions, McCartney made a brief cameo in a sketch as an auto mechanic, sharing the screen with Ferrell and cast member Marcello Hernandez. His appearance served as a high-profile conclusion to a season that hosted a diverse array of musical guests, including Bad Bunny, Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, and Ariana Grande.
