Modest Mouse Announce New Album 'An Eraser And A Maze' and Share 'Picking Dragon’s Pockets'

Modest Mouse have officially announced their eighth studio album, An Eraser And A Maze, marking the band’s first full-length release in five years. Following their 2021 effort The Golden Casket, the new record is scheduled to arrive on June 5 via Glacial Pace Recordings.

To celebrate the announcement, the band has shared the album’s high-octane opening track, ‘Picking Dragon’s Pockets’. The song features a grating, captivating guitar riff that quickly transitions into a glitchy, anthemic chorus, reflecting the band’s signature ability to dissect the complexities of a self-destructive world.

An Eraser And A Maze was produced by frontman Isaac Brock in collaboration with a powerhouse production team, including Jackknife Lee, Suzy Shinn, and Justin Raisin. According to a press release, the album is designed to sonically capture every distinct era of the band’s storied career.

Reflecting on the creative process and the themes behind the new record, Brock noted, “For this one, I turned off my filter and just let it all happen. Thoughts, emotions, feelings, all that stuff… you’re like the soup, and it’s not always easy to pick out the ingredients. I don’t dwell on things much. I don’t grieve much. I’m not sure I’m a person. I feel like I should have more feelings than I do. But then, you know, I’ll sing stuff. And I’m like, Oh, there it is. Oh — it’s in there.”
