Listen to “zero” [ft. Mereba] by cktrl

Southeast London multi-instrumentalist cktrl (aka Bradley Miller) fuses contemporary classical and experimental music, using woodwinds, horns, and pitch-shifted beats to convey warm intimacy. On last year’s Robyn EP, cktrl’s downcast saxophone and collaborator Duval Timothy’s delicate piano depicted a breakup in painterly gestures, leaving ample room for listeners to glimpse their own experiences of heartache through down-key instrumentation and lush songwriting.

On “zero,” a collaboration with R&B singer Mereba from cktrl’s upcoming EP of the same name, he slightly alters his formula by moving from abstract sketches toward more specific detail. Opening with a flutter of clarinet, the song quickly shifts into an ethereal ballad guided by stuttering beats and Mereba’s soft vocals. “So this is how it ends/From infinity to zero,” she sings, echoing and stretching the final word into a sigh of relief. Mereba’s silken voice is always a standout, but cktrl’s production is just as precise, using clatters of percussion and gently strummed electric guitar to capture a drifting state of mind. “zero” winds down with flourishes of saxophone and a knocking synth line that dissolves into a tranquil vision of moving beyond heartbreak.
