Listen to “Runnin” by Debby Friday

Debby Friday’s early EPs spidered out with serrated synths and ghostly vocal loops, coalescing the complicated relationship between desire and power into venomous industrial pop. On the serpentine “Runnin,” taken from the Vancouver electronic artist’s forthcoming album, Friday preserves her sinister touch as she expands into bolder, more upbeat territory. Over a chattering vocal sample and speaker-rattling beat, Friday raps on pleasure and pain with words as measured as an incantation: “I got smoke, I take it slow/Don’t beat your chest, just bend your knees.”

Where her earlier music jolted with abrasive noise, “Runnin” oozes swagger and confidence. But Friday doesn’t strip away the corrosive elements entirely; the song’s spare, lurching synths make an easy stomping ground for her brisk, focused rapping. When she repeats the song’s title in a quiet murmur during the chorus, she draws you in close—even if she never lets you get too comfortable.
