Listen to “Rid Myself” by Ribbon Stage

The cover of My Favorite Shrine, the debut 7" by New York City indie pop trio Ribbon Stage, nicely encapsulates the band’s vibe. Against a bubblegum-pink background are a series of black-and-white drawings, including a pair of pointe shoes, a bow, a safety pin, and a bulbous black spider. Across five brief tracks, the band channel scrappy noise-pop legends like Talulah Gosh and the Shop Assistants while adding their own cool, blasé spin.

“Rid Myself,” a lo-fi ditty about an impossible-to-please partner, feels particularly special. “A tough shell to crack/You never held back/While yelling at me,” guitarist Jolie M-A sings while bandmates David Sweetie (drums) and Anni Hilator (bass) furrow into the rumbling tune. “I don’t mind wasting my time/Inside my mind/Pretending/To not fixate on you.” “Rid Myself” is over before you know it, but for a brief moment, it offers a much-needed dose of upbeat introspection.
