Listen to “Lay Wit Ya” [ft. Duke Deuce] by Isaiah Rashad

On “Lay Wit Ya,” Chattanooga, Tennessee’s Isaiah Rashad makes his long-awaited return—it’s been five years since his debut album came out—with a rework of Three 6 Mafia’s iconic “Ridin’ N’ Da’ Chevy.” But the sample flip, which was “produced” by Hollywood Cole, is wildly basic—there is no attempt to reimagine the source material in any way. It’s understandably crass: Rashad wanted to come back with a single that would land on playlists and get a couple of spins on popular radio, and one of the easiest ways to do that is to drag new fans in with familiarity.

But despite how underwhelming the single is, my excitement for the TDE affiliate’s upcoming album hasn’t been tempered. His versatile flows and ability to shift between euphoric chants and street tales clouded by a looming sense of darkness sound as strong as ever. “Lay Wit Ya” also has a really fun guest verse from Duke Deuce, the Memphis-bred headbanging ball of supernova energy. Even so, it’s hard not to be distracted by the overpowering sample. If rappers and producers want to pay tribute to a revered Southern sound, they should make beats that incorporate Screw-era Houston greats like Big Pokey or Big Moe. It’s time to give the Three 6 Mafia flips a much-needed break.
