Lauryn Hill is so famously late to her shows it would be more of a shock for her to be on time. Thursday night (10/19) at Barclays Center was on Lauryn Hill Time (an hour past scheduled start time), but any annoyance over her punctuality or lack thereof melted away when she started to sing. Her command, delivery and style remain incredible, getting inside a song and turning it inside out.

This was the second night of the tour celebrating The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill‘s 25th anniversary (NJ’s Prudential Center was the first) and Lauryn was backed by a huge band and choir. Every song from the album was played, but not in original track order. The show opened with “Everything is Everything” and finished with her #1 smash “Doo Wop (That Thing).” (The album’s other hit, “Ex Factor,” was played a third of the way into the set.) Most of the songs got new arrangements and throughout the show there were projections of historical and famous figures and scenes from her life. When she did “To Zion” she showed home movies of her kids, and when she paused the performance when an audience member needed assistance, she brought out her ex-husband, Rohan Marley, and Zion, along with other crew and family members, to thank them.

After the Miseducation set, there was a brief intermission, and then Lauryn came back out with Pras and Wyclef for The Fugees‘ set. If the audience’s energy was flagging a little as the hour got late, The Fugees themselves brought it, as they performed masterful renditions of nearly all of The Score‘s songs, some of which featured new arrangements. It was a great night with two ’90s hip hop classics.

The Barclays show opened with a set from Rapsody, who said she was a last minute addition to the bill, and a set from DJ Reborn, who spun the classics. Photos from the whole night by P Squared are in this post and continue, along with a few fan-shot videos, below.
