Kylie Minogue Reflects on the Lasting Impact of Her Cancer Diagnosis
Kylie Minogue has shared a candid reflection on her experience with cancer, revealing that the diagnosis she received over two decades ago remains a significant part of her life today. The Australian pop icon, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 at the age of 36, noted that the ordeal continues to resonate with her long after her recovery.
The diagnosis was a pivotal moment in Minogue’s career, forcing her to withdraw from a highly anticipated headline performance at Glastonbury and postpone several tour dates. While she has since returned to the stage with immense success, the emotional weight of that period persists. In a recent interview with BBC News, Minogue described the initial news as a profound “shock.”
“You’re trying to understand something you’ve never thought about before,” she explained. “It’s a crash course. It’s very deep and extended, and it’s still with me today in many ways.”
This is not the first time the singer has addressed the long-term effects of her health journey. In 2023, she spoke about the ongoing process of navigating the trauma of her diagnosis, surgery, and chemotherapy, stating, “It’s trauma, and any trauma resides within you.”
Minogue is currently promoting her new, intimate three-part Netflix documentary, titled Kylie, which is set to arrive on the streaming platform tomorrow, Wednesday, May 20. The project offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at her life and career, including the more challenging chapters she has faced.

“In the end, I just had to take the plunge and really open myself up a little more,” Minogue said regarding her decision to participate in the documentary after previously declining similar offers. “If not now, when?”
To coincide with the documentary’s release, Minogue is also dropping a brand-new single titled ‘Light Up’. This follows a busy period for the star, who has been quietly working on new music throughout late 2025 and early 2026. While she remains tight-lipped about the specific direction of her upcoming material, she has hinted that it will likely diverge from the dance-pop sound of her recent albums, Tension and Tension II.
Reflecting on her resilience, Minogue’s journey from her 2005 diagnosis to her triumphant return to Worthy Farm for the Glastonbury ‘Legends Slot’ in 2019 serves as a testament to her enduring legacy as one of music’s most beloved figures.
