The current protests that are underway have shed light on many major flaws in the criminal justice system. From the way that policing works to how courtrooms function, there are many cases that have been left unresolved. Families are still demanding answers, as are the general public.

Most recently, there’s been a major outcry to re-open the tragic case of Kendrick Johnson. Johnson was found dead rolled up in a high school wrestling matt. His death was determined to be an accident, per the examiner, but in the wake of the recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, the public, including high profile celebrities, have demanded that the case be reopened.

The Georgia Bureau Of Investigation officially made a statement earlier today regarding the recent outcry. “The GBI has received numerous inquiries from the public about our involvement in the 2013 Kendrick Johnson death investigation. This case was investigated by the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, and the Department of Justice,” it reads in the first of three tweets.

“Our agency assisted the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office in the case by processing the scene. Our Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Johnson,” they continued. “This investigation is closed. All GBI documents pertaining to the case are available upon request through GBI’s Open Records Unit.”

was among the celebrities who were calling for justice. She took to Twitter where she shared a petition to reopen Johnson’s case that has reached 1.2M of the 1.5M goal.
