Having previously been earnest about his desire to “be one of the greats”, the shock of the win meant he stumbled on his words several times, which he explained was down to nerves. “I got a lot of people to thank. I don’t know if I’ll be up here again, so give me a second,” he told the crowd, saying: “Damn, I’m more nervous than I thought I’d be.”

He went on to praise his fellow nominees, singling out Michael B. Jordan in particular. “Michael, man, unbelievable. Just rewatched Sinners – hadn’t seen the after-credit scene. I’m happy I stuck around the second time.”

He also thanked director Josh Safdie for “crafting a role and a story” for him. “You made a story about the relatable dream and you didn’t preach to the audience about what’s right and wrong,” he said. “I think you should all be telling stories like that, so thank you for this dream.”

He then turned his attention to Jenner, who he has been seen with at more of events of late. With the camera panning over the the reality star as he spoke, Chalamet thanked her for her support.

“Thank you to my partner of three years. Thank you for our foundation,” he said. “I love you. I couldn’t do this without you.”

While the couple didn’t attend last night’s pre-show carpet, one of their previous matching outfits were spoofed that evening by Hacks’ Paul W. Downs and Meg Stalter, who donned exacts matches of Chalamet and Jenner’s looks at the Marty Supreme Los Angeles premiere.

Chalamet’s turn as ping pong obsessive Marty Mauser in the A24 film also earned a glowing five-star review from NME, with Jordan Bassett writing: Marty Supreme received a glowing five-star review from NME. “The direction is so frenetic that it somehow makes table tennis even more thrilling than the rubber-burning race scenes in F1, while there are at least three jaw-dropping set-pieces that Safdie lands on you like gleefully delivered trick shots.

“This is a story about living a great life, however you may define that. It is a film about living fully and without fear, a cynicism-free zone where, for all their fast-talking, people love each other so much it makes your heart feel like it’s about to burst. Talk about a smash.”
