SummerStage, Fusicology and Future x Sounds celebrated what would’ve been J. Dilla‘s 50th birthday with “Sounds of Detroit” at Herbert Von King Park on Friday night (7/12). Breakbeat Lou started off the night with a DJ set, and he joined Slum Village during their set, which included a new song from this year’s F.U.N. (and a couple of brief periods of light rain). T3 hailed Dilla, who had previously been part of the group, as “an original and authentic,” and he and Young RJ said “we’re doing this for J Dilla!” before launching into “Tainted.”

Next was a DJ set from Rich Medina, and then The Pharcyde went on. They were backed by DJ Cell, and like they did at Brooklyn Steel in April, they made a dedication to their late mentor, Reggie Andrews. Ras Kass joined them briefly, and Fatlip told the crowd how Kass helped them get a record deal. He also told the story how the group of tried to work with Q-Tip, who was busy with Mobb Deep’s The Infamous at the time, but gave them a CD by Jay Dee, which led to Dee’s contributions to Labcabincalifornia.

The Pharcyde played War’s “Why Can’t We Be Friends” after their set, and stuck around to sign autographs at the merch table. You can see pictures from the whole night by Edwina Hay below.
