Detroit, MI – As police brutality is a point contention more than ever, Tee Grizzley puts his thoughts on the topic to wax with a new track.
Released on Friday (June 5), “Mr. Officer” features Queen Naija and members the Detroit Youth Choir and takes a defiant stance against the senseless killings black people at the hands police ficers. In a statement, the Detroit native explained why doing the song was so important to him.
“I got a million experiences I can touch on in my music, but I couldn’t make another song without speaking on what’s going on,” Grizzley said. “I’m not a politician or activist but right now it’s everybody’s job to speak up because the pain, the struggle for equality and the brutality is real.”
Coinciding with the song’s release, the “No Effort” rapper also donated $10,000 each to Detroit-based inner-city youth programs Victory Management Homes and the Horatio Williams Foundation. The latter’s founder, Horatio Williams, released a statement thanking Grizzley for helping propel the youth forward.
“We are beyond gratuitous for this donation to the Horatio Williams Foundation,” Williams said. “With the current state the country, it is important we show our youth they are our future – they can do anything! This generous donation will help the foundation continue providing impactful programs propelling them towards success. These kids are our future. They are loved, they are bright, and they are worthy.”
Grizzley joins a growing number artists lending their voice to the fight against police brutality. Earlier on Friday, Pharoahe Monch, Styles P and Marco Polo released “Same Sh!t, Different Toilet,” taking a defiant stance against police brutality and racism.
