Spike Lee celebrating ‘Do The Right Thing’ 35th anniversary with NYC block party & limited Jordans

Summer in Brooklyn means it’s once again time for Spike Lee to throw his legendary block parties, and he’s starting the season with a bang, celebrating 35 years of his 1989 film Do The Right Thing. It happens on Sunday, June 30 at Do The Right Thing Way (between Lexington Ave and Quincy Street), on the same block where the film was shot, between noon and 8 PM. Spike’s promising “Good Music” (courtesy of DJ Spinna) “Sal’s Famous Pizza,” “Photo Ops,” “Exclusive Merch,” and “Much More;” see a flyer below.

The film famously takes place on the hottest day of the summer, but this Sunday is only supposed to hit 89°.

Also celebrating the film’s anniversary are new Jordans inspired by it. The DTRT 35 Spizike Low, which was created with Spike’s son Jackson Lewis Lee, have a 1989 lace dubet, “DTRT 35” tag, and “LOVE/HATE” insole art. They come packaged in a Sal’s Pizza box, and they’re limited to 100 pairs worldwide. Here’s what they look like:

They won’t be made available for retail sale, so good luck scoring a pair; they were made for Spike’s friends and family.

You never know who might show up at one of Spike’s block parties; Erykah Badu appeared at one of his annual celebrations of Michael Jackson in 2018.

BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival is also hosting a free screening of Do The Right Thing in Prospect Park’s Lena Horne Bandshell on July 6 as part of its 2024 season. You can RSVP here.
