‘Silent Hill 2’ is getting a “faithful” film adaptation

Silent Hill 2 is set to get a “faithful” film adaptation with director Christophe Gans returning to the franchise.

The original Silent Hill was released in 1999 and kickstarted a long-running franchise of psychological horror games. In 2006, a film adaptation directed by long-time fan Christophe Gans was released, with the M. J. Basset-directed sequel (Silent Hill: Revelation) coming in 2012.

It’s now been confirmed that a new film inspired by the beloved Silent Hill 2 is heading to cinemas. Return To Silent Hill will see Gans return to the franchise for a “faithful adaptation” of the video game.

The project was first announced back in 2022 and filming took place the following year. However Return To Silent Hill has only just been picked up by a distributor, with Cineverse promising a theatrical release for the film.

Silent Hill is one of the best video game franchises period and Christophe Gans did a phenomenal job capturing the atmosphere of the games once again with Return To Silent Hill,” Cineverse’s Brandon Hill said in a statement (via Variety).

“I am delighted to partner with Cineverse, which has shown a genuine understanding of fanship. Return To Silent Hill is an adaptation created out of deep respect for a true masterpiece of a game, Konami’s iconic Silent Hill 2. I hope fans will enjoy and be fulfilled with the experience this new film has to offer,” Gans added.

Return To Silent Hill will star Jeremy Irvine as James Sunderland, Hannah Emily Anderson as Mary and Evie Templeton as Laura.  “The film follows James, a man broken after his relationship with the love of his life, Mary, ends. When a mysterious letter from her calls him back to Silent Hill, he finds a once-recognisable town transformed by an unknown evil,” reads an official description of the film.

“While James desperately searches for Mary he encounters terrifying creatures and begins to unravel the mystery of what happened to the town. But as he descends deeper into the darkness the secrets he uncovers lead to a horrifying truth, and James finds himself struggling to hold on long enough to save his one true love.”

A critically acclaimed remake of Silent Hill 2 was released last year by Konami and a new game is set for release later this year.

Set in the remote Japanese town of Ebisugaoka during the 1960s, Silent Hill f focuses on teenager Shimizu Hinako. “They lead an unremarkable life—until a thick fog descends, transforming her once-familiar home into a desolate and terrifying place.

Silent Hill f will challenge players with uncomfortable themes and their attached psychological torment,” explains a press release. “The game reflects the customs and culture of Japan during that era while delivering an intense and deeply emotional horror experience.”
