Drew Brees has been in the news quite a bit over the last 24 hours As he explained in a recent interview, kneeling during the National Anthem is disrespectful to the flag and is the wrong way to go about doing things. Fans and players were livid with Brees’ comments and rightfully so, especially with everything going on. Protesting during the anthem is as peaceful as it gets but Brees feels like it is a slap in the face to service members.
Today on FS1’s Undisputed, Shannon Sharpe went off on Brees and reminded him that there were thousands of black service members in World War 2 and that when they came back from war, they still weren’t afforded equal rights. As Sharpe explained, black people still have a lot to fight for, and kneeling during the anthem is the perfect way to get people’s attention without stirring up any violence.
Sharpe also went on to say that it is going to be very difficult for Brees to gain respect in the locker room moving forward and that it might be better for him to just retire. It’s obviously a bold suggestion, especially since Brees has signed on for another season.
The fallout of Brees’ comments will most likely continue well into the season so it should be interesting to see how it all plays out.
