PinkPantheress & Ice Spice: “Boys a Liar Pt. 2”
PinkPantheress has always had her finger on her generation’s pulse, collaborating with fellow Gen-Z pop phenoms like Beabadoobee and Willow and partaking in “Met Gala behavior” with TikTok influencer Hal Baddie, who came onstage at her New York show to rap to Nicki Minaj with her signature selfie stick. So, of course, for the remix of her hit “Boy’s a Liar,” PinkPantheress had to call on the it-girl of the moment, Princess Diana herself. On paper, Mura Masa’s mutant Jersey club beat might feel ill-suited to Ice Spice, but, then again, the Bronx drill rapper has an aptitude for destroying the most random samples, and she navigates PinkPantheress’ bubblegum pop with ease.
The track is like a conversation between two besties, each armed with differing sensibilities toward modern dating games. “Did you ever want me/Am I ever good enough?,” PinkPantheress laments, her sensitivity and self-doubt mirrored by her spacey, almost aimless singing. Ice Spice’s trademark disdain and nonchalant delivery provides the perfect foil to the Londoner’s timid fragility: “Bet he blowin’ her back/Thinkin’ ’bout me ’cause he know that ass fat,” she raps hilariously. But in the next breath, Ice Spice is able to admit that she’s losing sleep over the pain he’s caused her, showing that the duo’s perspectives are not so different. “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2” is an impeccable team-up from a baddie and her baddie friend.
