Listen to “Say It” by SASAMI
Sasami Ashworth has a fantastical vision for her latest single: “I see a hot femme with a mystical flamethrower engulfed in emotional blue flames throwing elbows alone in an industrial dance club in outer space.” The fourth release from her upcoming album, the hard rock-influenced Squeeze, “Say It” is a venomous demand for communication. Resignation becomes righteous fury as Ashworth embraces the album’s self-professed mission of “anti-toxic positivity.” To drive the point home, Squeeze’s cover reinvents Ashworth as the Japanese folk spirit Nure-onna: a split-tongued, snake-bodied deity with a hankering for human blood.
“Say It” leads us into the abyss of jilted rage: A thumping beat erupts into boombox-destroying delirium. Fire-alarm guitars and blown-out drums build with apocalyptic intensity. “Don’t want to agonize, just say it,” SASAMI seethes, her vocals demonically pitched down. While she may be imploring the object of her disaffection to break their silence, she knows she’s posing less of a request than a command. Demand the answers you deserve, she seems to cry out. Someone has gotta fight for themself.
