This was supposed to be Billie Eilish’s year; she had multiple Grammy wins under her belt and a massive arena tour on the books. But pandemics don’t discriminate, so as the world shut down and millions retreated into their homes, so did she. “my future” is the first song Eilish wrote under quarantine, and it finds the young pop star once again in a contemplative headspace. She’s already proven a master of the delicate ballad, but her latest is far more sanguine than her last proper single. “Can’t you hear me? I’m not coming home,” she murmurs. “Do you understand? I’ve changed my plans/’Cause I’m in love with my future.”

She’s not singing to any former lover—she’s addressing herself. Solitude was a cause for despair on “when the party’s over”: “Quiet when I’m coming home and I’m on my own/I could lie, say I like it like that.” But now, almost two years later, she’s attempting to find happiness and take it for herself. FINNEAS’ production reflects this emotional breakthrough; mellow electric piano gives way to drums and tiny guitar flourishes as Billie stretches her wings, lifted up by lush background coos. She doesn’t know where she’s going, but then again, neither do any of us: “I’m in love, but not with anybody here/I’ll see you in a couple years.”
