Listen to “Lost One” by Jazmine Sullivan

The deep well of regret that seeps out from every rasp and flutter of Jazmine Sullivan’s stunning new single, “Lost One,” shouldn’t be unfamiliar. Sullivan’s most recent solo album, 2015’s Reality Show, was a phenomenal, stylistically wide-ranging set of masterful R&B character portraits. Frank Ocean turned to her for gospel-powered guest vocals on both of his game-changing 2016 albums, Blonde / Endless. And yet according to the Billboard charts, her commercial peak came with her 2008 debut, Fearless. Nominated for a dozen Grammys, she has won precisely zero of the awards.

“Lost One,” an atmospheric R&B ballad about the one who got away, should be reason enough for both Sullivan’s estranged lover and the shiftless music industry to come home. The ghostly production, built upon little more than a muffled guitar loop that sounds like it was sampled from a room away, feels unhurried and exploratory. Sullivan’s vocals, meanwhile, are as expressive and commanding as ever; her lyrics are as artfully plainspoken as they are heart-wrenchingly confessional. “Please don’t forget about me,” she begs, echoing into the void. “Try not to love no one.” It should be impossible for Sullivan to get lost in the crowd now.
