Listen to “Human Thing” by Mattie
Dallas-based artist MATTIE works as a cosmetologist by day and experimental musician by night. Her ambient-tinged electronic songs pump with off-kilter heartbeats, guided by her melancholy vocal delivery and spacious production. Made in collaboration with fellow Dallas producer Black Taffy, MATTIE’s latest single “Human Thing” uses a lockstep beat and metronomic synth line to establish a sullen mood, unfurling over six tense minutes to transport you deep into her synthetic universe. Her words are an outpouring, commanding attention through stretched-out vowels that echo with delay: “Have you ever really loved a human?” she asks, flattening the last word into a raspy whisper. MATTIE gyrates around a neon-soaked roller rink in the song’s video, which is intercut with scenes of disembodied CGI heads and blasts of psychedelic lighting. The fusion of technicolor imagery with unsettling, hypnotic music throws MATTIE’s cybernetic vision in unforgettable relief.
