Listen to “4U” by Pi’erre Bourne
There might not be a hard drive in rap more coveted than Pi’erre Bourne’s. He’s no stranger to mythological leaks: “Pissy Pamper,” even with an unclearable city pop sample, has its name stamped in history books. But as a solo artist, Pi’erre’s developed his own dedicated following that trades his leaks and screen-recorded Instagram Live snippets like notes you don’t want your teacher to catch you passing around in class. His latest single—supposedly the first from The Life of Pi’erre 5—floated around the internet for a few years as a fuzzy hallucination simply titled “Playstation.” After teasing it during a virtual Rolling Loud performance in October (“Oh, y’all ready for “Playstation” to drop? I think they said December 4th,” he said with a laugh)—it’s finally arrived with a new name, “4U,” and it’s just as dreamy and enchanting as it was two years ago.
Pi’erre has never shied away from saving some of his best production for himself. “4U” could’ve been ripped straight from the Mario Kart soundtrack, all the way down to the crescendoing four-note melody that leads straight into his tag like a “Ready, Set, Go!” Pi’erre’s syrupy vocals sink into the mix as he sings about love in cheesy, Valentine’s Day card-ready messages that you’d only admit to saying if you were half as sprung as him. “Like my PlayStation, girl, let me console you,” he croons over the light hum of the beat. “I know it’s hard to talk sometimes when you want to.” As a rapper, Pi’erre aims for the same targets he does when he’s behind the boards for rappers like Playboi Carti, curating a mood before anything else. For anyone who thinks his beats would be better off with someone else, you might want to listen closer to the opening: “If you’re getting mad, you’re supposed to.” No one sounds better on Pi’erre’s beats than the man who made them.
