Moana 2 is homeward bound. This week, Disney announced that the seafaring sequel to its hit 2016 film will be streaming on Disney+ on March 12. Plenty of people went to see Moana 2 in theaters, judging by its box office haul. It was one of three movies released last year to pass the billion-dollar mark at the worldwide box office, alongside Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine.
Following the release calendar for other big-budget box office movies, Moana 2 was initially released to buy on VOD platforms like Prime Video or Apple TV. Currently, you can buy it on digital for $19.99.
The film will be streaming on Disney+ shortly before its physical media release — fans will be able to pick up a copy on Blu-ray, including 4K, on March 18.
Moana 2, directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, stars Auli’i Cravalho as Moana, Dwayne Johnson as Maui, and Nicole Scherzinger as Sina, reprising their roles from the first film. The sequel adds Hualālai Chung, Rose Matafeo, and David Fane. Set three years after the events of the original film, Moana 2 follows its titular heroine onto dangerous waters after she’s called by her wayfinding ancestors.
The film is worth seeing in the highest definition possible because, according to Rolling Stone film critic David Fear, “the animation of these sun-dappled Pacific Island landscapes, the aqua-blue gulfs and roiling ocean waves, and the purple-hued meteorological phenomenons couldn’t look more awe-inspiring.”
