Horror fans are already calling ‘Resident Evil 9’ the best game of 2026

Horror fans are already calling Resident Evil 9 the best game of 2026 after more information about the sequel was revealed.

Last weekend, Capcom confirmed the long-rumoured Resident Evil 9 would be launching next year. Resident Evil Requiem will return players to the now-abandoned Racoon City, following the events of Resident Evil 2 and 3, and introduce them to new protagonist Grace Ashcroft who is “given a case to investigate, leading to the terrifying events to follow.”

Now more information about Resident Evil Requiem has been revealed, with a select number of journalists invited to play a brief demo at Summer Games Fest. “Not every Resident Evil game has pushed the boundaries of video game horror, but this one has made an especially disturbing debut,” wrote The Guardian. “I played Resident Evil 9 and they heard me scream in the booth next door,” said Eurogamer.

According to reports, fans will be able to play in both first and third person, while Grace Ashcroft is a more timid protagonist compared to the soldiers that have featured in other games. New photos of Grace and the horrifying monsters she’ll have to survive have been shared on social media. There have also been hints that a familiar face from the series will help her out.

And all this has made fans very excited. “This is my most anticipated game of 2026 – even more than Grand Theft Auto 6. There’s just something about Resident Evil games that brings out the nostalgia and the hype that gets me. Seeing familiar characters also helps a lot in that area. Cannot wait for this,” said one Reddit user.

“Can’t wait for this. Capcom has been fire lately and Resident Evil games rarely disappoint. The last few have been amazing,” wrote another. “Game Of The Year,” said a third.

“While survival horror takes centerstage, Resident Evil Requiem will feature high-stakes cinematic action that will take the series in a bold new direction,” said a blog post announcing the game.

“A new era of survival horror begins in 2026. Technological advancements combined with the development team’s depth of experience combine in a story with rich characters and gameplay that’s more immersive than ever before,” continued a statement from developers. “Prepare to escape death in a heart-stopping experience that will chill you to your core.”
