The fourth season of the Netflix fantasy drama is currently in production, with Hemsworth taking over the lead role of Geralt of Rivia from Cavill. The latter announced he would be vacating the position in October 2022, later hinting towards creative differences as the reason for his departure.

Hemsworth, known for his roles in The Hunger Games and Independence Day: Resurgence, was announced for the role shortly after Cavill’s departure.

Last month, the streaming service also officially commissioned a fifth season, which they confirmed would be the final one.

Seasons four and five will adapt the remaining three books by Andrzej Sapkowski, Baptism of FireThe Tower of the Swallow and Lady of the Lake, promising to offer an “epic and satisfying conclusion” to the hit fantasy drama.

On the announcement, writer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said: “It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia. We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.”

An official description of the fourth season reads: “After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out season three, the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other. If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire — and finding one another again.”

Actor Freya Allan, who plays the crown princess Ciri, told NME in January that her character will be changed in the coming season.

“If you think about her at the beginning of the series, she’s going to be completely different by the end [of the story] and everything she’s experienced,” she said. “I think she’s the character you really get to see change the most throughout the whole show. And I feel very grateful to get to do that.”

She added: “And I think this next realm and this next chapter that we’re going into with her is going to be a very, very different one. It’s going to be a very different series and I’m excited and kind of scared to experience that version of her and the things that she’s going to go through potentially in the next season.”
