Halle Berry Says Prince Once Asked Her Out on a Piece of Paper

Halle Berry had the distinct privilege of being asked out by Prince. The actress remembered the moment last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, telling the late-night host that it was “sort of” in person.

“I was at one of his concerts here on Sunset at the Key Club,” she told Jimmy Kimmel. “And he had somebody come out with a piece of paper. And you know like kids do, you say, ‘Do you like me, yes or no?’ I went, ‘Yes!’ I mean, I’m at his concert, right? Yes! Came back out again: ‘Would you go out with me?’”

“And did you check one of the boxes?” Kimmel inquired. “No,” Berry confirmed. “I didn’t send the paper back. I kept the paper.” Kimmel acknowledged, “You must have the greatest stories of guys hitting on you. I mean, I can’t even imagine.”

Berry also spoke about her X-Men character Storm and rumors that she was going to appear in Deadpool & Wolverine alongside Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds. “I heard that, too,” she said. “I was at a Michael Kors fashion show, and Blake [Lively], Ryan’s wife, asked me, ‘If Ryan asked you to be in Deadpool would you?’ I said, ‘Well, duh.’ Yeah, of course, I would, but they never called me.”

Berry is currently starring in Never Let Go, a survival thriller she also produced. The film, directed by Alexandre Aja, is in theaters now. The actress recently spoke to Marie Claire for a recent profile tied to the film and took the opportunity to express her continued disappointment with the Oscars.

“I’m still eternally miffed that no Black woman has come behind me for that best actress Oscar, I’m continually saddened by that year after year,” said Berry, the only Black Best Actress winner, for her performance in 2001’s Monster’s Ball. “And it’s certainly not because there has been nobody deserving.”

Berry has previously criticized the Academy for its lack of diversity. Following 2016’s social media movement, #OscarsSoWhite, the actress spoke with then-Teen Vogue’s editor-in-chief Elaine Welteroth. While Berry recognized her historic moment at the 2002 Oscars, she also stated that she still thought it wasn’t enough.

“I sat there and I really thought, ‘Wow, that moment really meant nothing. It meant nothing. I thought it meant something, but I think it meant nothing,’” said Berry, referencing the lack of progress since winning the category. “I was profoundly hurt by that, and saddened by that.”
