Exclusive Interview With StevenCharles

StevenCharles is a Montreal, CA-native singer-songwriter who moved to NYC to pursue a music career. He’s been writing songs with his brother since the young age of six years old.

He splits his time between New York City and Atlanta, where his brother resides, and where he records his music at Patchwerk Studios.

He just recently launched his debut single, “Stay,” an empowering song set to ideally introduce him to the music scene worldwide.

Congratulations on your debut release, ”Stay”, what a way to launch your career!

Please tell us more about the meaning behind your new track, and the message or feeling you want to convey to the listener?

“Stay” alludes to spending the most perfect day with your favorite person. It’s the honeymoon phase of a new relationship where all you want to do is spend every waking moment together. So when the sun sets, instead of going your separate ways, someone puts themselves out there and is vulnerable enough to ask if they can continue enjoying each other’s company. It’s that exciting part where everything feels brand new, and I want to show how no matter how long you’ve been together this type of fun spontaneity can still happen.

How did your sound evolve since you started making music?

I grew up listening to a lot of pop music on the radio and I feel my biggest influences that changed the way I sing and make music have been listening to gospel and jazz. When I was introduced to those genres, I started doing more riffs and creating more intricate melodies in my songs. Now the sky’s the limit when it comes to the evolution of my sound.

What style best describes “Stay” and your music?

Stay specifically is a mixture of Pop and Neo-Soul. It’s very different from what you’re used to hearing on the radio, however it would still fit perfectly. There’s a bit of jazz in the melodies, the beat is really chill and low-key but you could still dance and groove to it nicely. The piano my brother performs from the upright in our childhood home adds a very smokey lounge kind of vibe to the production. It’s a unique-sounding track but it’s super catchy and easy to listen to.

What inspires you?

I think what inspires me the most is knowing that all humans have the ability to bounce back from their darkest hours. Each day is an opportunity to be better than the last and it’s pretty inspiring to realize how the human race continues to push evolutional boundaries in social consciousness, awareness and empathy. Every next generation cares more and more about doing the right thing, being a good person and holding people accountable. That gives me a lot of hope.

Would you like to collaborate with other artists? Who would be your top 3?

It’s really difficult to choose because I love so many artists! Alicia Keys definitely holds a top spot for me. I also love Ty Dolla $ign’s musical aesthetic and he seems to me like one of the dopest artists out there. He has so much versatility and that’s why I feel like our musical styles could link up and make something magical. Otherwise, I’d love to be on a song with other Canadian artists like The Weeknd or Jessie Reyes. But again there’s a scroll list of artists that I could choose.

What are you currently working on, any upcoming plans you would like to share with our audience?

I’ll definitely have another single come out before the end of the year. It’s another chill love song that’s more of a ballad-type for the winter months. This summer I’m working on filming a music video to “Stay” and that should drop sometime in the fall too. I’m looking forward to having visuals to my singles and telling stories through artistically curated music videos. It’s another outlet of my artistry I can’t wait to share with my audience.

 Thank You!
