Coldplay have ended their BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend headline set with a song they’ve written in honour of Luton Town FC, ‘Orange’ – watch it below.

Addressing the crowd, frontman Chris Martin noted the amount of press Coldplay had received pleading them to change the lyrics for their hit ‘Yellow’ to ‘Orange’, the home colours of the city’s local football team, Luton Town FC. The Big Weekend was held in Luton this year.

Though Coldplay did go on to play ‘Yellow’ unchanged, Martin unveiled a special song he wrote in honour of the Hatters, fittingly called ‘Orange’.

It saw Martin croon lyrics such as: “We didn’t win all our matches, we didn’t win the cup / But when you get knocked down in Luton, you always get back up!” and “I was born in love with Luton, and I’m always gonna be”. 

Luton Town FC returned the love on social media, writing: “Coldplay just said they love us 😁”. Take a listen to ‘Orange’ below:

Coldplay also brought out Sabrina Carpenter to sing ‘Magic’ at their headline set. Earlier today, Sabrina Carpenter performed her own slot at the festival, and she surprised Coldplay fans by coming out and singing ‘Magic’ with the frontman, with her proclaiming: “I love Coldplay. What is this? Give it up for Coldplay – what the hell?”

The band are also set to become the first act to headline Glastonbury for the fifth time this June. They’ll top the iconic Pyramid Stage alongside SZA and Dua Lipa.

Their set will come ahead of their final album next year, with Martin announcing he had plans to stop writing music as a band by 2025.

“Well I know I can tell you: our last proper record will come out in 2025 and after that I think we will only tour,” Martin said during an interview with Jo Wiley. “Maybe we’ll do some collaborative things but the Coldplay catalogue, as it were, finishes then.”

NME spoke with Coldplay back in 2021, where they revealed a similar sentiment to us: “We’re going to make 12 albums. Because it’s a lot to pour everything into making them. I love it and it’s amazing, but it’s very intense too,” he said.

“I feel like because I know that challenge is finite, making this music doesn’t feel difficult, it feels like, ‘This is what we’re supposed to be doing’.”
