Cameron Diaz doesn’t want to do any more rom-coms

Charlie’s Angels star Cameron Diaz has revealed that after returning to Hollywood for the first time in a decade, the one genre she won’t be coming back to is romantic comedies.

The actor was one of the highest profile stars of the ‘90s and ‘00s, with her biggest hits being rom-coms such as There’s Something About Mary, My Best Friend’s Wedding, and The Holiday. After making Annie in 2014, she embarked on a hiatus from film-making which was confirmed as a retirement three years later, as she focused on her family.

She returns to movies with action-comedy Back In Action, co-starring Jamie Foxx. The pair play former CIA spies brought back into service when their identities are exposed. Despite this comeback, Diaz said in an interview that she will be selective about any future roles.

“I don’t know how I view it. It’s hard to say,” she told Empire Magazine. “If I say it then it becomes this thing. I reserve the right to say no to doing a movie ever again, and I reserve the right to say yes if I decide to. I’m not defining anything. I’m just open to whatever makes sense for me and my family at any given moment”.

One genre she will definitely say no to will be romantic comedies, later saying in the interview: “No more rom-coms, only mom-coms”.

The actor has two children with her husband, Good Charlotte musician Benji Madden. Her last romantic comedy film was shortly before Annie, starring in 2014’s The Other Woman.

Back In Action is available on Netflix now. Last year, she spoke about why she stepped away from acting, saying: “It felt like something I had to do to reclaim my own life”. Since returning, she has already confirmed a sequel to one of her biggest box office successes, with a fifth Shrek film confirmed with the original cast all returning.
