billy woods and Kenny Segal just wrapped up their tour celebrating their beloved 2019 album Hiding Places, and for the penultimate night on Saturday (12/7) they stopped in Brooklyn for a show at Warsaw, joined by lots of friends and collaborators. ShrapKnel kicked off the night with a set of songs from their Controller 7-produced new album, this year’s Nobody Planning to Leave, and Curly Castro, who moved to Philadelphia after being born and raised in Brooklyn, declared that the prodigal son had returned.
Castro and PremRock also served as hosts for the next set, which was billed as Backwoodz Friends, and had DJ Mo Niklz backing K-the-I??? (who released his new Kenny Segal-produced album Genuine Dexterity one day earlier via Backwoodz and brought out album guests ShrapKnel and Jesse the Tree), AKAI SOLO, Fatboi Sharif, and Cavalier. Cavalier closed out his set by covering Armand Hammer’s We Buy Diabetic Test Strips track “Niggardly (Blocked Call).” Breeze Brewin’, up next, was joined by his siblings Buddy Slim and Queen Herawin for a reunion of Juggaknots, performing “Trouble Man,” and they were also joined by Illa Gee.
When it was time for the headliners, Kenny Segal took the stage on his own first, with billy woods soon joining him for “Spongebob.” In addition to that and other Hiding Places tracks, they performed songs from their most recent collaborative album, last year’s Maps, as well as woods’ solo material and Armand Hammar songs. woods’ Armand Hammer partner ELUCID joined them for “crawlspace,” ShrapKnel returned to the stage for “Babylon by Bus,” and Despot did his verses from “Versailles,” “Asylum,” “Paraquat,” and “Falling Out the Sky” (which ELUCID also came out for).
