In 30 Rock, Chapman portrayed the character Grizz, the loyal childhood friend and assistant to Tracy Morgan’s character, Tracy Jordan. A fan-favorite presence, Chapman appeared in 80 episodes throughout the show’s seven-season run, which concluded in 2012. His character was frequently involved in the show’s sharp-witted humor, including a notable history with Tina Fey’s character, Liz Lemon.

Donte “Hammer” Harrison, a Harlem Globetrotter and Chapman’s cousin, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram. “Life gave my cousin Grizz Chapman some heavy battles, but he fought them with strength and dignity until the very end,” Harrison wrote. “A good heart, good energy, and somebody who made an impact in this life. After years of fighting illness and dialysis, he passed peacefully in his sleep on May 22nd, 2026.”
