Helado Negro and Reyna Tropical Collaborate on New Album ‘Helado Tropical’
Roberto Carlos Lange, known professionally as Helado Negro, has joined forces with Reyna Tropical—the Los Angeles-based project led by She Shreds founder and occasional Sleater-Kinney tour guitarist Fabi Reyna—for a brand-new collaborative album. The project, titled Helado Tropical, is set for release on July 17 via Psychic Hotline.
To mark the announcement, the duo has shared the music video for their lead single, “Tocando.” Directed by Josh Finck, the visual features Lange and Reyna navigating a grocery store, offering a playful glimpse into the creative world they have built together.
According to a press release, the album was born from a studio session that was initially intended to produce only a single track. Reflecting on the collaborative process, Lange noted, “There was never a moment where we felt super stuck. It was just like ‘ok what’s next?’ and even within the songs, trying to create these micro worlds—we just felt excited about each moment…. It’s not about us speaking to each other. It’s about us existing in the same feeling.”
Reyna echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the thematic depth of the record. “This particular album really was able to ground me in what movement means to me and just different characters that the range of movement, travel, environment—sun, wind, and water—has the potential to bring out,” she explained.
In support of the upcoming release, the pair has scheduled two California performances: August 13 at Los Angeles’ John Anson Ford Theater and August 15 at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Gardens. A wider tour announcement is expected to follow.
