Ed Sheeran promises new music every “two, three weeks”

Ed Sheeran has revealed that he plans to share new music every two or three weeks.

The pop singer shared the news during a new episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, where he shed insight into his lyrics and his plans for new music.

During the interview, Sheeran also spoke to host Alex Cooper about his newly-released single ‘Azizam’, which is set to feature on an upcoming album titled ‘Play’.

At time of writing, ‘Azizam’ is the only preview of the new record and the release date has not yet been announced. However, the singer-songwriter promised during the interview that fans won’t have to wait long for more singles to come – particularly given the “broad” nature of the album.

“My idea was because the album is so broad, I didn’t want to just be like, ‘Here’s the single. Here’s the album,’ so there’s music coming every sort of two, three weeks,” he said.

“So there’s ‘Azizam’ now, there’s a song called ‘Old Phone’ that comes out in a couple of weeks, and then after that there’s another song coming,” he added. “We shot all these videos, and I’m less about single moments and more about, I want people to sort of feel the breadth of the record, and I’m very confident that one of the songs will work.

“It’s more about just putting them out and letting people hear some of the record before it’s out, rather than what I’ve done before, which is just like, ‘Here’s my first single. Here’s the album’.”

The hints about an upcoming song called ‘Old Phone’ come after Sheeran took to social media earlier this year and began dropping details about his new singles with fans. In the comments, he promised three new songs, ‘Azizam’, ‘Old Phone’ and ‘Sapphire’. The first was shared as the lead single for ‘Play’, and while ‘Old Phone’ hasn’t been officially released yet, it was given a live debut when Sheeran appeared on The Tonight Show.

When asked how the new record compares to his previous releases, Sheeran said: “It’s definitely different. I think I’ve been more explorative with this album. I kind of had an attitude of ‘Why the fuck not?’”

“I lived in India for a little bit and worked with a load of Indian musicians and producers [then] made a song like ‘Azizam’ with Ilya who’s Persian and that’s in that world,  and ‘Old Phone’ I think is more in a Nashville country world. There’s just lots of different moments on the record, and the record is called ‘Play’ and therefore it has to be playful. It has to be celebratory.”

Although ‘Play’ will mark his first album since 2023’s ‘Autumn Variations’, Sheeran has shared new music since then – dropping the festive track called ‘Under The Tree’ from Richard Curtis’ animated Netflix film That Christmas last year.

In other Ed Sheeran news, the appearance on The Tonight Show also saw, the musician reveal the titles of his next five studio records, and teased plans for a posthumous album. Since then, he has also performed a surprise pop up show at London’s Kings Cross last week and covered Chappell Roan while disguised as an emo on a New York subway.

He is due to play an intimate set at Coachella 2025.
