Little is confirmed about the follow-up, but the original film’s directors, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, are directing the sequel. Illumination boss Chris Meledandri and Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto will also return as producers, with Matthew Fogel back on writing duties.

When the sequel was announced, Miyamoto described it as having a “bright and fun story” which will “broaden Mario’s world further”. The closing scene in the first movie teased the appearance of Yoshi, so the dinosaur will likely be a key part of the sequel.

No cast members have been announced, but the majority of the original voice cast are expected to return, like Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, Keegan-Michael Key and Seth Rogen.
