Pras talks cancelled Fugees tour, Lauryn Hill, more in new interview

The cancellation of Lauryn Hill & The Fugees’ tour earlier this month, days before it was to start, has gotten pretty messy. Lauryn Hill released a statement in the days following saying that “some media outlet’s penchant for sensationalism and clickbait headlines have seemingly created a narrative that has affected ticket sales for the North American portion of the tour,” and a week later, Pras released a diss track aimed at Lauryn, telling TMZ, “I saved her reputation for 20 years by not telling my side of the story but oops … cat’s out the bag.” Now Pras has spoken about the situation further in a new interview with Vulture. He told them the cancellation “is not something that just happened overnight,” and relayed what he said happened when the trio reunited in 2021 at The Rooftop at Pier 17 for a Global Citizen show:

[Global Citizen] were gracious enough to let us play at another location because they knew that Lauryn could be late and it’s live. They were like, go film it and then we’ll just inject it into whatever segment of the show that we’re projecting. She was three hours late. It was raining. We had fans whose cars were getting towed. The mayor had to reimburse some of the towing. He’s a fan of the Fugees too; he felt bad.

Pras also told Vulture that “Bar Mitzfa” is “not a diss track,” adding, “You’re family, you have internal disagreements, but it’s not going to be on a level where I’m dissing her — that doesn’t make any sense.” He said he was “both surprised and not surprised” about Lauryn announcing the tour cancellation, and said that he and Wyclef “don’t even ask her if she’s gonna be on time anymore; we say, ‘How late is she going to be?’ It gets to a point that you say, is it even really all worth it.”

Fugees have a tour of Europe and the UK that’s on for now, but because of the guilty verdict he received in 2023 in connection to a political conspiracy case, Pras can’t currently leave the US to be part of it (he also didn’t appear at a May festival date the group did in Memphis). Asked by Vulture if he’s looking forward to it anyway, Pras said, “It’s a loaded question. I’m always going to love to perform. I feel like when we’re onstage, nothing can stop us. The thing that I don’t want to do is be inconsiderate to the fans. People take fans for granted, and I get it, but you know, I’m amongst the common people, even though I’m in my bracket. I don’t want to be a part of something that’s not going to be able to reciprocate the appreciation and gratitude. If the tour in Europe can be cleared up, I want to come.”

Pras also has a new track, “Free Prass,” in the works, that features Wyclef and Lil Wayne, and was produced by Jerry “Wonda.” Lauryn does not currently appear on it, though Pras told Vulture it “was supposed to be a Fugees and Wayne track.” Stay tuned for more on that.
