The Fugees‘ reunion has been anything but a smooth ride. The trio of Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Pras first reunited for a one-off NYC show in 2021 (their first show in 15 years), which was supposed to be followed by a tour that same year, but the tour was first postponed to 2022 and then ultimately cancelled. They finally did a full tour in 2023, a tour that also had Lauryn Hill doing her own sets as a co-headliner, and they finished that tour out, but then Lauryn had to postpone more 2023 shows with Fugees, citing “serious vocal strain.” Most recently, they performed at this past spring’s inaugural RiverBeat festival in Memphis, with Pras not present.

The Fugees and Lauryn were set to do another co-headlining US tour this summer, but cancelled it just days before it was set to start. After cancelling, Lauryn said in a statement that “some media outlet’s penchant for sensationalism and clickbait headlines” about her previously-cited vocal issues “have seemingly created a narrative that has affected ticket sales for the North American portion of the tour.”

Fugees member Pras apparently saw things a little differently. After Lauryn posted her statement, Pras told TMZ, “I saved her reputation for 20 years by not telling my side of the story but oops … cat’s out the bag.” The Fugees still have a fall Europe/UK tour scheduled that Pras told TMZ he hopes will still happen, but that it’s ultimately up to the fans, to which TMZ added, “Translation: Buy the tickets and they will come.”

The prospect of that Europe/UK tour seems a little awkward now though, because Pras has taken things a step further by releasing a diss track aimed at Lauryn Hill called “Bar Mitzfa.” TMZ has the exclusive of the song, which includes the lyrics “Don’t blame me, blame her, she made the mess / Not another fucking penny’s what I told ‘Clef.” In a since-expired Instagram story, he added, “Nobody will remember: Click bait beefs, your salary, how many Gucci bags you owned, bogus excuses. People will remember: How you made them feel, if you kept your word, if they could count on you, if you come on time!!!”

On “Bar Mitzfa,” Pras also seemingly references the guilty verdict that he received in 2023 in connection to a political conspiracy case that has him facing up to 20 years in prison. It was later speculated in a report that Pras’ legal issues caused the cancellation of the group’s 2022 tour, not the COVID concerns that the group themselves had cited.

Last fall, Pras filed for a retrial, saying his now-former lawyer used an experimental generative AI program, EyeLevel.AI, to draft the closing arguments in his case. The lawyer was later fined and sentenced to one year of unsupervised probation.

Neither Lauryn Hill nor Wyclef Jean have responded to Pras’ new diss track, and it seems like this story is very much still developing…
