Killer Mike had a busy Sunday releasing new single “HUMBLE ME” and picking up Album of the Year at the 2024 BET Awards.

“HUMBLE ME” is all about his arrest at the Grammy Awards ceremony in February which happened just after he won all three categories he was nominated for including Rap Album of the Year for MICHAEL. Here’s a verse:

I won at the Grammys for spitting my grammar, did that for Atlanta
Did that for Atlanta, bruh, swept up like a janitor
Got sent to the slammer, bruh
Treat me like an animal or some kind of Hannibal, vicious and cannibal
The devil be doing you, right when you doing it, the devil will ruin you
Behind me, Satan, I walk out the door with my head up and handcuffs with pride
Cause all of my heroes wore handcuffs, the FBI shot some of them and they died
Betty and Coretta cried, Jacqueline went into hiding
I was sitting there in a room full of cops, like Daniel was sitting with the lions
I had to quiet my mind
I prayed and I prayed and I prayed
The liars were lying their lies
I kept on just keeping my faith

“I was in the studio the very next day. I’m as inspired as ever and I’m just following the music at this point,” Mike says about the new single. “All my heroes have been cuffed and mishandled in some way. I just thanked God in that moment of being Daniel in the lion’s den. I came out of the jailhouse in the pouring rain to my wife waiting for me, lit a joint, celebrated a bit and then woke up and got the news about my son’s kidney,” he continues, referencing the news that arrived the next day that a kidney donor was found for his son Pony Boy. “I believe that humility and worship granted me God’s grace in the face of that test, and I believe my son receiving his kidney was a blessing from God.”

As for his acceptance speech at the BET Awards, Mike covered a lot of ground in his usual fiery, eloquent style. “Thank you for seeing me, Black people,” he began. “Thank you for believing in me Black people. Thank you for honoring me in this way.” He then thanked his team before addressing the Grammys incident.

“Technically, I was not supposed to be here,” Mike said. “I was put in handcuffs, and I was marched out of this building. But I want to tell you — look at God, because I’m back, baby. I’m back and I’m living. I want to tell Black people that because of BET, I’m back. Not because of no white person calling nobody. A Black man runs this business. A Black company put this show on, and they got my Black ass back in here. Thank y’all.”

He continued, thanking everyone in attendance. “I am a representation of one of the finest things God has ever made — and that’s one half of the Black family. Black men and women — I am you, whether you’re young, whether you’re old, whether you like me, whether you don’t like me. I am absolutely you, and this win is absolutely ours.”

He also turned to the 2024 election, urging people to vote and to not just think of the Presidential race. “They’re gonna tell you who we vote for is important, and it is,” Mike said. “Who we vote for on the big stage is important, but it’s more important you know who your city council person is, who your prosecutor is. If you don’t like the people running, run your Black ass to the poll and run yourself.”
