2 Live Crew’s Brother Marquis has died at 58

Brother Marquis of influential Miami rap group 2 Live Crew (real name Mark D. Ross) has passed away at age 58. A post on the group’s social media confirmed the sad news. Cause of death has not been reported.

Marquis was born in Rochester, NY and moved to Los Angeles before being invited to move to Florida and join 2 Live Crew in time for their 1986 debut album The 2 Live Crew Is What We Are. They became known for their tongue-in-cheek, sexually explicit songs and made history when their 1989 album As Nasty as They Wanna Be was ruled obscene by a U.S. district court judge, which was eventually overturned during an obscenity trial that has since gone down as a turning point for freedom of speech in music.

2 Live Crew’s Fresh Kid Ice passed away in 2017.

Rest in peace, Brother Marquis.
