Brazilian legend Arthur Verocai playing 1972 debut LP with full orchestra on first-ever US tour

Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai released his self-titled debut in 1972. It’s a psych-tropicalia cult classic that has been important to hip hop, having been sampled by MF Doom, Ludacris & Common, Little Brother, Action Bronson, Curren$y, and more. (Listen below.) Fifty-one years later, he’ll be performing the album front-to-back with a 30-piece orchestra and special guests ROGÊ and Samantha Schmütz on his first-ever US tour that starts this weekend.

The tour hits NYC on August 11 at Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park, part of its free Summer in the City series’ Hip Hop Week. The show is hosted by A Tribe Called Quest‘s Ali Shaheed Muhammad and his frequent collaborator Adrian Younge who together run label Jazz is Dead that is presenting the tour — they will open the evening with a DJ set. More info here.

Arthur’s tour starts Saturday with two L.A. shows and also includes shows in Chicago and Berkeley, CA. All dates are listed, along with a stream of the album, below.
