Listen to “Come My Way” by Saba
Life is a high-stakes game, and you had better play it like the buzzer is sounding. Whether he was naming his 2016 release Bucket List Project or examining the ravages of losing a beloved cousin too early on his affecting 2018 album Care for Me, Saba has always rapped like someone who is afraid their number is about to be called.
So it’s remarkable to hear just how laid-back he sounds on “Come My Way,” the first single from his upcoming project Few Good Things. Over a spacious loop supplied by DaedaePivot and Daoud, the duo that produced the entirety of Care for Me, Saba leaves a little more space for breath. Even when he goes into one of his multisyllabic runs, he does it on mouse feet, rapping, “We ain’t got no time to relax,” like someone who actually has plenty of time for it. Joining him is Krayzie Bone, a childhood hero of Saba’s who makes a lightning-speed double-time verse feel like dipping your toes in a pond. Krayzie’s grace has a leavening effect on Saba, who sounds, for just a moment, like someone content to be just where they are.
