Listen to “Take My Breath” by The Weeknd
The Weeknd’s After Hours era is officially six feet under. Lest you worry that the musical alter-ego of Abel Tesfaye would retreat to less debaucherous pastures, “Take My Breath” proves that the Weeknd is still game for a bacchanalian escapade—even one featuring a little autoerotic asphyxiation. No magic has been lost in the interim: “Take My Breath” captures the same high as 2019’s “Blinding Lights,” reuniting him with the track’s producers, Max Martin and Oscar Holter. Martin’s handiwork is all over the track, from the strutting intro (which eventually gives way to sparkling Moroder synths) to the extremely infectious melody.
At first, the lyrics are typical Weeknd fare: The noted party monster finds himself entangled in fiery sexual relations. Only this time, his lover wants to go a bit further: She’ll risk it all to make the pleasure last forever. (Oh, that’s what the song is about.) The Weeknd is down—to an extent. “You’re way too young to end your life,” he warns his paramour. “Girl, I don’t wanna be the one who pays the price.” But any hesitation is swept away by the glossy, dance floor-ready chorus, which is punctuated by a well-placed cymbal. He may be losing oxygen, but he sounds full of life.
