The Bronx producer Kush Jones is prolific: His Bandcamp page features 19 solo releases from just the past four years, including nine volumes of his Strictly 4 My CDJZ series. The Strictly series tends toward dancefloor immediacy; the sounds are raw, the arrangements fluid. No matter the style—footwork, house, techno, drum’n’bass—the tracks tend to sound like they were made quickly; a sense of spontaneity is paramount.

“Earth Note,” the lead track on Jones’ forthcoming EP for Washington, D.C.’s Future Times label, marks a shift in his approach. The groove is looser and the palette is lusher, yet it’s still plenty energetic. Jones’ drum programming snaps like a tightly wound spring, and there’s an appealing crispness to his claps and hi-hats. But there’s a newfound depth to the synths, which layer the sunrise pads of classic Detroit techno with a wide array of squelching and chiming counterpoints. It’s a veritable feast of texture and emotion. Even as the bassline drives forward, those pads keep turning inward—an invitation to daydream, no matter how hard the crowd is dancing.
